  • Download halts/freezes. If this happens, delays might need to be increased in the settings.
  • Program sometimes does not close out the process completely, which eats up the memory. If this happens, end the process with task manager.
  • No sign of progress? Your book might possibly not be compatible. Certain Chegg eBooks use a different format that will not work with the current method used to snapshot the pages. Here are some signs that a book might not be compatible:
    1. Page heights vary from page to page.
    2. The next button is not located horizontally, but instead vertically.
  • Having problems that aren't listed here? Try a previous version.
Hi there,
I'm a product manager that works on Chegg's eTextbook product. First, let me apologize that your experience using our eBooks has been less than exceptional. We truly value feedback from our students so please keep it coming. You're not alone in feeling this way so we've made it a top priority to address.
As for why its happening:
1) eTexbooks are relatively large (in terms of file size / bits and bytes). Unlike Harry Potter or the latest New York Times best selling fiction novel, textbooks contain more images, embedded media, and font sets.
2) Chegg's eReader requires an internet connection meaning we load all of this sizeable book content over the web (from our CDN).
3) This means we are occasionally at the mercy of the network speed. If a certain page is really large (lots of images and other media) and the connection is slow, it can take awhile to load. Many of our students read on their tablets or phones and can be on degraded wifi or 3G networks from time to time.
What are we doing about it?
1) We've made a lot of incremental improvements to how we manage page resources and content downloading over the last few months. Give it another whirl if you haven't already. We also have a new version of our iOS and Android apps that are coming out before the end of year and will be even speedier.
2) We have to address the reality that some of our readers will have a terrible internet connection (or no internet connection like on an airplane) and so we are working on the ability to download the book and read offline. This means we would download all of the content to your device and not rely on an internet connection. This adds up front time (and takes up more space on your device - which can fill up quickly if you have a 16GB iPhone for example) but makes performance better later. In fact, some eReaders like Kindle (and Adobe Acrobat, which you mentioned) do this automatically..
Thanks again for the feedback. We hope to see you back at Chegg soon!
