Most likely the driver for the USB parallel cable isn't installed correctly. Go into your device manager, find the USB printer cable, right-click, and uninstall. Next, unplug the USB cable, and install the drivers for it BEFORE plugging it back in. Then plug in, you should get the 'Found new hardware' balloon, and be in good shape (at least for the cable).
You shouldn't need to Add Printer for a UsB printer - it should automatically detect it and lead you through the installation process without you needing to select a port (it will do so automatically). I suspect the problem is the cable and once you have that fixed, the printer installation will run smoothly. USB devices are generally very easy to install because of this. Then again, you are getting it to install (though I'm sure not correctly) so I wonder f it can really be the cable - but we'll see).
