An update of their 2007 compilation Monsters of Dancehall, VP's 2009 overview of Elephant Man benefits from the serious roll the Energy God had been on for the two years in between. During this time the dancehall don released a seemingly never-ending set of successful, fist-pumping anthems including 'Pon de River Pon de Bank,' 'Signal de Plane,' 'Nuh Linga,' and 'Rah Rah.' All four are very necessary tracks and the Energy God set does a great job of mixing them with the humorous, near-novelty numbers like the '99 Luftballons' quoting 'Elephant Message' or the great 'Tall Up Tall Up' which mixes dancehall, gunplay, and somehow, Mozart. Rapper Twista shows up on the remix of 'Jook Gal,' Demarco adds his full-bodied singing to 'Old Broom,' but it's Ce'Cile who's most welcome, adding her brassy attitude to the back and forth number 'Bad Gal, Bad Man.' There are a ridiculous amount of hits here but any newcomer thinking this is the one-stop shop should know that big tracks recorded for other labels -- 'Gully Creeper,' 'Sesame Street,' and so on -- are missing. Still, it's a great intro to one of dancehall's most over the top characters. Sweetening the deal is a bonus DVD featuring interviews, videos, plus a full-length, well captured Elephant Man concert.
